Isabelle McEwen was born in Montreal, Canada, and grew up there. She did a B.A. in Comminucation Arts at Concordia University and went thereafter to Hamburg,Germany, where she studied music theater at the Theaterakademie. She later wrote a PhD in Media Studies at the Hamburg University. After her theater studies she directed contermporary operas with the group New Opera Box that she founded. From 1989 to 1998 she worked with Hungarian artist Leonard Dax on experimental art projects and installations. In those years she started working on performances which became increasingly political. She also makes short films and works as a lecturer at the Hamburg University.
